My Earliest Memory

My earliest memories of are the period surrounding my sister’s birth. I was a little over 2 1/2 years old. The first memory is being in my aunt’s house and having my eyes washed out. My brother and I were staying with my aunt and uncle while my mother and sister were in the hospital. Unfortunately, we and my cousins came down with pink eye (conjuntivitis) and our eyes were all sticky in the morning. I remember sitting on the counter at my aunt’s while she washed out my eyes and hating the cool water on my face. I can still remember how the cool water felt. My brother was screaming; he was less than a year old and had pink eye, too.

My next memory has to do with my sister, too. I was outside playing by myself and our neighbor came through the yard and asked me about the baby. I remember telling her that we didn’t know what color her eyes would actually be, because they started out blue but seemed to be turning brown.

It’s funny that these are my earliest memories because I must have been starting to form sentences at the time and those were the things that were important to me at the time.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.
