If I could pilot any vehicle, it would be my own car, a 2007 Hyundai Elantra, which FINALLY, after nearly 7 weeks I am piloting once again.

Nearly 7 weeks ago, a hit-and-run driver of a truck pulling a trailer with machinery on it decided to merge into my lane ON TOP OF MY CAR. Then he proceeded to drive off to his job and I had to limp my car over to a parking lot to call the police and a tow trunk. The hit-and-run driver had ripped off the entire left side (driver’s side for those in the US and Canada) of my car. Mirror was gone; car cap was gone; driver’s door was smashed in; bumper and fender were in rough shape. I took my car to the body shop and it took almost 4 weeks to put the car back together, along with alienating my daughter further who had offered to loan me her spare car but didn’t realize it would be for that long and wanted her car back NOW. Luckily the car was finished and her husband gave me a ride to pick it up (“He took time from work to forcibly take back their car”). But I had taken my dog to the vet in the car (it was an emergency) and there was dog hair in the car! The battery was dead from being unused for so long, but they jumped it and it was mine again.

After I had driven it a little bit (a few miles) the check engine light came on. Thinking this was just a coincidence, I took the car to the dealership to have it checked out. Not a coincidence. The accident had ripped a hole in the fuel tank and damaged the fuel pump and fumes and gas were getting into the engine. So another call to the insurance company was needed and the car was left at the dealership for repair (and a new battery, which was needed). I got a rental car and have been driving that around but it’s not my car. I had to cancel two vet appointments because I couldn’t take pets in the rental.

The car was ready to take home on Friday but the dealership didn’t have the check from the insurance company which had been sent out on Monday. When the check had not shown up by Monday afternoon, I called my agent who put a stop payment on the check and took a check over late yesterday. So this morning I returned the rental and FINALLY picked up MY car.

My car is the only vehicle I want to pilot. I will drive it anywhere it has to go: to the pharmacy, to take my granddaughters to dinner, to go to the movies, wherever. This is the vehicle I want to drive, Someone else can drive the Star Ship or whatever.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.

    I’m glad you’re happy with your ride. Personally, I rock a mini-van.
