O is for Opossum

My daughter’s cats stay in the garage garage with the door cracked at the bottom. Her husband is very allergic to the cats and so the two of them, Phil and Picnic, stay either in there or on the porch. Except for Picnic who wanders the neighborhood and has been known to go into other people’s houses. He’s a very social cat.

One night, my daughter and her family heard a commotion in the garage. They went down to check and found that the cats had acquired a new friend–a opossum. It wanders into the garage and likes the cats. Apparently there isn’t much fighting, just socializing. They live in a residential area, not out in the country but apparently there are opossums in the city, too.

They had never seen a opossum before (neither had the cats) but they made friends and the opossum left by sunrise since they are nocturnal animals. He/she was interested in the cats’s food, so it wasn’t purely a social visit.

The opossum came around for a few weeks and then stopped coming. I wonder what type of animal will show up next.

This post is part of a month-long series, A-Z, that I am participating in for the month of April.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.
