If I Were President

If I were President, I would pull our troops out of Iraq (where have I heard that before) and Afghanistan. As far as I can see, we are doing no earthly good in those countries and are probably doing harm. Those countries need to learn to care for themselves. Of course, it isn’t really quite fair that we did such damage to their country, destroying their infrastructure. We may have done away with a dictator but we have destroyed so much of a country like Iraq. In addition, we have made quick a mess of the country. The electricity and the roads are a mess. The Sunnis and the Shias don’t get along and we have have done nothing to try to help resolve that situation.

In Afghanistan, we have lost track of our mission which originally to capture Osama bin Laden and destroy al-Quaida. We have doen neither of those things but have supported a corrupt government that undermines us at every turn. We don’t belong there now; this is worse than the Vietnam War was.

We need to find a mission and complete it in both countries or go home. This hanging on and and staying with no mission is ridiculous and needs to stop. We also need to shut down Guantanamo Base and send those people home or give them a trial. To hold people seemingly forever is just wrong.

And that’s what I would do if I were President.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.
