As he have seen in these past weeks in japan, nuclear power is very dangerous to mess round with. We have seen the power of earthquakes and tsunami and what they can do to supposedly “safe” nuclear plants. But we don’t need natural disasters to see the dangers of nuclear power. We have only to look to Three-Mile Island in the United States and Cherobyl in the Ukraine. They were not subject to natural disasters but to man-made errors. And these are just as frequent and as dangerous as natural disasters.
Just look at the number of air traffic controller who have fallen asleep on their jobs in the past months. The same man-made erros can easily occur in nuclear plants as well. In addition, we have no means of disposing of spent fuel rods. All the plans for disposal in the United States have fallen through, and of course, what state wants radioactive waste on their land?
We have not well thought out the problems with nuclear power but have gone ahead and used nuclear power because it is cheap and easy. We have forgotten the dangers of nuclear power until a disaster happens like the terrible events in Japan. It is only a matter of time before these same events occur in other nuclear plants throughout the world.
We need to either find a way to make nuclear power safer or work harder to develop alternative, safer fuels for our world. We can;t have the situation we have today remain the same.
