As you may know, Ernie is my nearly 6 year old Japanese Chin rescue whom I absolutely adore. But Ernie has a terrible case of dry eyes and ulcers formed on both his corneas. He had both eyes operated on about 8 weeks ago, and thank God, the operations were successful. One eye was patched with glue and the other with a graft. Poor thing, he had to wear a “cone of shame” to protect his eyes for about 4 weeks and looked so pathetic with that cone around his neck. Luckily it came off 4 weeks ago.
He went back to the doctor today for a recheck. Unfortunately, his tear production was terrible (it had been good a while ago) so Dr. Greller switched him to a different type of artificial tears and perhaps he’ll make more of his own tears. Sounds like that commercial, doesn’t it? So we left with another bag full of medications for Ernie’s eyes. He can still use some of his old medications but now we’re up to about six different meds a day, some three times a day, another four times a day, one once a day, and others twice a day. It seems that I am constantly putting drops in his eyes. Luckily he is a very good patient and doesn’t fight the meds too much. Ernie’s is such a good boy.
Ralphy is actually very good too about letting me give Ernie his meds, When we first started, Ralphy was quite curious about the procedures but he’s learned that it’s not very exciting, so he leaves Ernie alone while I’m putting the meds in. The main medicine procedures take place just before Ernie goes out in the morning and in the evening. They both know that when Ernie comes in, they will get cookies so they look forward to that. They love their cookies. Then they have a little tussling session and roll around and growl and play. They have a grand time playing together.
The chewer of the two is Ralphy who is still a puppy and loves to chew. But he seems to have encouraged Ernie to chew paper lately. Ernie has never been much for playing with toys bit Ralphy loves his toys, especially the chew toys. He loves the ones that squeak, too. I think they scare Ernie.
So my two special guys are doing well, and I pray that Ernie’s eyes improve. We are very faithful about putting in all the drops, so I am hopeful they will heal quickly. Poor little Ernie. Please prayer for his little eyes.
I pray for Ernie! I pray for a miracle for him too.
Awww…I hope he gets better soon! Cute little doggies!!
He’s in my prayers, sweet lady!
