Between Years

What were your “between” years (10-12) like?

My between years, to my recollection, were actually not too bad. I had my best friend Connie and we were inseparable. We we constantly at each other’s houses and spend our time at the mall and gossiping and just hanging out. I remember we bought our first makeup at this age at Woolworth’s.

School was tolerable. I was at the top of my class and I worked hard to get there. My plan was to be the valedictorian so that I could win a scholarship to one of the girls’ Catholic high schools in the city. That was my goal and I worked hard to achieve it. There wer some kids who shut me out because of my ambition but I didn’t bother with them. I tried out of our school’s cheer squad and made alternate, which made me pretty happy because it put me on the fringe of the “in” crowd. But I had my own friends besides Connie that loved the same books that I did and liked the music I liked. We had hayrides and Halloween parties at this age, I remember, which were a lot of fun.

Things at home were not that great but I was becoming more outer focused on my friends and events outside the home so these were pretty good years for me. I think they were also good because we had a kindergarten through Grade 8 )grammar) school and there was not a separate middle or junior high school so we just moved along in school and didn’t go through that terrible middle school or junior high school phase. All in all, it was a good time.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.
