Becoming an Adult

What is the moment you leave childhood and enter adulthood?

There isn’t one particular moment where you become an adult, but there are several meaningful events that occur that help you complete the process of becoming an adult. One is when you become a parent in your own right. You are now responsible for another human being and that is a huge responsibility. You are well on your way to adulthood when you become a parent.

There are two other events that move you along the road to adulthood. One is the death of your first parent. It wakes you up to the finality of life and the notion that your parents will not always be around to care for you. The second is when your remaining parent dies. Then you are the older generation. Your parents are gone and you are alone in the world and must cope with adulthood. You have finally become an adult.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.

Another thought provoking post thanks. I think it was moving away from home when I married and suddenly realised that I was the adult, no more mother to wash, clean, cook etc. I was really grown up then. And the death one after the other of parents – that too is a milestone in life.,
