Book and Film Challenge Update

Book 36 was Idiot America: How Stupidity Became A Virtue in the Land of the Free by Charles F. Pierce. The premise of the book is that there is a war on educated, intellectual, expertise in America by those who rely on their Gut or emotions. The author Quotes widely from James Madison, our fourth President, and one of the writers of our Constitution, who firmly believed that our nation needed an educated populace in order for the government to function properly. The author then lays out his argument of how emotional and Gut reactions have taken over the intellectual and educated debate in this country, with people who are not educated nor experts nor intellectual grabbing center-stage in important areas. He cites the controversy over including the teaching of “intellectual design” (aka creationism) in schools and even trying to include Congress, the Supreme Court, and the President in this issue. Another example is the sad story of the removal of Terry Schiavo’s feeding tube, the young woman in Florida who had suffered a heart attack and was in an irreversible coma and who was brain dead. People who had no actual knowledge of the case tried to prevent the wishes of her husband from being carried out, ignoring the information from her physicians and taking the case into the courts and tying up the courts for months. Another example is that Americans love conspiracy theories, but take little interest in actual conspiracies such as the Iran-Contra Conspiracy which reached the highest levels of government. He uses the example of the Iraq war, being sold to the American people as somehow connected to 9/11 and weapons of mass destruction, when the experts said that nothing could be further from the truth. Another example is the opponents of global warming, when all the expert scientists and data show that there is climate change occurring and that human behavior is involved in this change. This was a very enlightening book and a scary book as it outlines how people who have no knowledge but believe something strongly enough can so heavily influence our lives. Thirty-six down, 64 to go.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.
