Book number 82 was The Finer Points of Sausage Dogs by Alexander McCall Smith. This was a Professor Dr. Moritz-Maria von Ingelfeld Entertainment, as McCall Smith calls this series. The title derives from the first stories in the book in which von Ingelfeld is asked to lecture at the University of Arkansas in Fayette in the USA, mistakenly as a vet who is well versed in daschunds. Unfortunately the man he has been mistaken for has also recently died. The professor with whom he stayed comes to Regensburg to visit soon after and a sausage dog who has been hot by a car comes into the Institute for treatment. Von Ingelfeld has the third-year student amputate the dogs crushed leg, only it is the fron leg instead of the back leg that was crushed. So the correct leg is also amputated. Then von Ingefeld punctures an artery in another leg and that has to be amputated. So the poor dog has to be fitted with a cart with wheels to get around. And to whom does the sausage dog belong? To Professor Dr. Dr. Dr. Unterholtzer! Who is not happy, to say the least.
Another of von Ingelfeld’s adventures involves a trip to Italy and a visit to Rome where he decides to work in the Vatican Library. A certain other patron was making quite a bit of noise as various people kept coming in to see him and talk to him. Von Ingelfeld finally went over to him and told him that he was being rude as others were working. The chief librarian then tells von Ingelfeld that he has been rude to the Pope himself! Von Ingelfeld is terribly embarrassed and sets out to apologize to the Pope, which he does and has coffee with the Pope in his apartments.
Further adventures on vonIngelfeld include a cruise on which he has been invited to give lecures. At first few people show up for his lectures, but after the ship’s newpaper runs an article about von Ingelfeld and mentions he is unmarried, his lectures are filled with unmarried ladies. He is sent boxes of chocolates and invited to dinner at their tables. Then after his lectures conclude, he leaves the ship without telling anyone. He is reported missing at sea. He returned to the University to find Unterholzer in his office since Unterholzer thought he was dead and took over his office. Just a misunderstanding, Eighty-two down, 18 to go.
