Daily Prompt–Faithful

Tell us about the role faith plays in your life.

mosqueI am a Muslim and my faith plays a very large role in my life. I believe very strongly in a personal God who hears and answers prayer. Sometimes. Sometimes He doesn’t. I don’t know why. Only God knows why. But I believe.

I prayer five times a day, in praise of God. After my early morning prayers I make dua’a to God, asking Him for specific requests for the people who are important in my life and for guidance in my life. I feel this brings me closer to God and informs my life and helps me to be a better person in this world  that is filled with temptations to not be a good person.

Juma’a, our congregational worship on Fridays, is an important part of my life. Besides the Friday mid-day prayer, we listen to the imam give a lecture on our faith in today’s world or on some part of the Quran. This worship service gives us a chance to connect with other Muslims as well.

We also have meetings and classes for specific groups within our community to strengthen us. For example, the Sisters meet on Saturday evening for a get-together class to discuss something of interest to us such as “Are Muslim Women Oppressed?” We meet at McDonald’s and have dinner and the kids play in the play area and we meet and discuss among ourselves.

So you see, my faith plays a very large role in my life. I am reminded of it five times a day when I pray and those days when I meet with my community. It is constantly with me and I am glad that it is. Because of it, I am a better person.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.
