Book Challenge Update–85

I have finished the 85th book for the book challenge. It was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Harry Potter Book 7 by J. K. Rowling.

harry potter and the deathly hallowsI have finally read all seven Harry Potter books. I have attempted to read this book twice before and gotten stuck in the middle twice. But this time I managed to push through and finish the book.

Each of the Harry Potter book get successively darker and more violent. This is not different. This book is certainly filled with violence and death. It begins with violence and death as Harry is moved from his aunt and uncle’s house to the Weasley’s home on the eve of his 17th birthday. The plan is to have seven “Harrys” to throw off Voldemort’s troops. But Voldemort seems to know of the plan and Mad Eye is killed in the melée. Harry, Ron, and Hermione take part in the preparation for Bill and Fleur’s wedding. While this is going on, someone from the Ministry arrives with the contents of Dumbledore’s will for the three of them. Harry receives the snitch he won in his first match, Ron receives a Deluminator, and Hermione receives a book of tales. At the wedding, news that the Ministry has fallen to Voldemort arrives and the three must leave.

Ron, Harry, and Hermione camp out in the wilds of Britain, trying to determine what to do. They believe they are supposed to find the Horcruxes. They decide to go to Harry’s house on Grimwald Place. And they make that their base. Kraecher waits on them. They know the locket is at the Ministry and formulate a plan to infiltrate the Ministry to get the locket. They get the locket and then find that they cannot go back to Grimwald Place but must camp out in the wilds of Britain again.

Ron has a fight with Harry and Hermione. He says that Harry doesn’t really have a plan and Ron leaves to go home. Harry and Hermione are left together. They go to Godric’s Hollow together. They see the strange symbol that Luna’s father was wearing on a tombstone in Godric’s Hollow. They visit the cottage of an ancient historian but instead they meet Nagini, Voldemort’s snake, and Hermione’s has to save Harry. But in doing so, she breaks his wand. Harry is very depressed about this as he loves this wand with the dual cores that has defeated Voldemort previously. They do not find the sword of Gryffindor in Godric’s Hollow. They go back and move their camp.

At camp, Harry sees a white doe patronus. He follows it into the wood and to a pond. There in the pond is the sword of Gryffindor. He pulls it out. Then he realizes that Ron is there. He has come back. He couldn’t stay away from them. They use the sword of Gryffindor to destroy the locket Horcrux. It is painful. They go to visit Luna’s father and find out about the symbol he was wearing. He tells them the story of the Deathly Hallows. One is the Elder Wand, which Harry knows was Dumbledore’s wand which Voldemort has stolen from Dumbledore’s tomb. One is the Resurrection stone. One is the Invisibility Cloak which Harry has. Harry isn’t sure if he is supposed to now go after the Horcruxes or the Deathly Hallows. The Death Eaters come after the three while they are at Luna’s home and they escape and go to Bill and Fleur’s home.

While they are at Bill and Fleur’s home, the wand make Ollivander is there recuperating from his capture by Voldemort and a Goblin is also there. Harry, Ron, and Hermione plot with the Goblin to break into Gringott’s into the Malfoy’s vault to get another Horcrux. The Goblin wants the sword of Gryffindor as payment. The three agree reluctantly and they proceed to break into Gringott’s. They get the golden cup and fly away on a dragon and eventually get themselves dropped again in the wilds of Britain. Now they need to get into Hogswarts to get the last Horcrux.

They go to Hogsmeade and meet Aberforth Dumbledore who runs a tavern. There is a painting on his wall that is a portal into Hogswarts. They meet Neville coming out of this painting and he leads them into Hogswart through the painting. Dumbledore’s Army has assembled to fight with Harry. Harry is looking for the diadem and must find that first. It is the final Horcrux, He thinks. He manages to find it in the lost treasures room and a fight for it ensues. Harry manages to win it but now Voldemort knows Harry is in Hogswart and sends his forces to battle Harry and his forces.

A violent, all out battles occurs. It is a vicious battle and many lives are lost. Many of Harry’s friends die in this battle. Harry is devastated by the loss of life. Voldemort has given Harry 30 minutes to come to him in the Forbidden Forest or he will resume the fighting. Harry believes he must face Voldemort and die in order for the fighting to stop. He goes to Dumbledore’s office and looks in the Pensieve. He sees that Snape was really in love with his mother Lily. Snape was also really working with Dumbledore. Dumbledore was dying. The Elder Wand was really Snape’s. That’s why the wand doesn’t work for Voldemort. It’s master is really Snape. Voldemort kills Snape so he will be the master of the Elder Wand.

Harry goes to meet Voldemort. There is a great flash of light. Harry wakes up to find himself naked and with Dumbledore. Dumbledore explains everything to Harry. He tells him all about the Deathly Hallows (the snitch, as Harry now knows, is the Resurrection stone, but he has lost it in the Forest) and the Horcruxes. Voldemort killed the Horcrux that was contained within Harry. Now all that is left is Nagini the snake. Harry still must go back and finish his mission. After their talk, Harry finds himself back in the Forest. Voldemort carries him back to Hogswart and tells the students and Harry’s followers that Harry is dead. Harry is playing dead, but then suddenly pulls on the Invisibility Cloak and begins to fight again. Neville kills the snake and Voldemort is no more. Harry shows himself and there is rejoicing amidst the sorrow over all the deaths. The reign of Voldemort is over. Harry goes back to his room in Hogswart.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.

  1. The Hook says:

Rowling actually changed the world with her work. Or at the very least, she impacted it immeasurably.
    Great review!

  2. This was the best book (and film/s) for me. I loved it.
