I have read the 96th book for the book challenge. It was Dead Water: A Shetland Novel by Ann Cleeves.
The Fiscal, Rhona Laing, goes out to her skull one evening and finds a body in the boat. She calls Sandy Wilson and tells him to call in the team from Inverness. Jimmy Perez is still not working full-time after Fran’s death. Sandy comes to the marina to see if he knows who the dead man is, and he does. It is Jerry Markham, a reporter who used to work in Shetland but who now works in London.
Willow Reeves is the new DI from Inverness. She interviews the Fiscal and believes that Rhona knows more than she lets on. They work to find where Jerry Markham was killed. They know he wasn’t killed in the boat. He discover that he went to see his parents in Ravenswick and had an appointment at Sullom Voe to see the energy works there. He met with Andy Belshaw, the PR person. The team is looking for Jerry’s car, a flashy Alfa Romeo. They find it at Varnagarth where he was supposed to attend a meeting of people opposed to the Power of Water. But he never showed up.
The team finds that Jerry met with a woman at Bonhoga but they can’t find who the woman was. It was a middle-aged well dressed woman. Was it the Fiscal? They also learn that Jerry had gotten a girl pregnant a few years ago. This was Evie Watt who is involved with the Power of Water. She is now engaged to John Henderson, a pilot on Sullom Voe. His wife has died of cancer years earlier. Evie claims she hadn’t seen Jerry Markham since he had come back.
Then John Henderson is found murdered on the road. The team is trying to find a connection between Jerry Markham and John Henderson. The team finds the place on the side of the road where Jerry Markham was murdered. Jimmy Perez also gets involved in the investigation. He finds that Jerry and John met at Sullom Voe and had a discussion before Jerry’s death. He is getting closer to figuring out who killed the two.
Jimmy and Willow interview Evie and her parent, Francis and Jessie, on the island of Fetlar. Francis hated Jerry Markham for what he did to his daughter. He would do anything to protect his daughter. Willow is convinced that Rhona knows something about the murders.
Then Rhona goes missing. Jimmy had a message from her but can’t find her. He knows the killer has kidnapped her and that he must find her. He goes to John Henderson’s house but she isn’t there. There is one other place to look. Jimmy goes there. Willow is close behind.
The ending is classic Ann Cleeves. She leaves the identity of the killer until the very end and then explains how Jimmy figured out who killed the two men and why. This was a good read, and you got side-tracked looking for clues in one area when the killer was actually focusing on something very simple and personal.
