I have finished the 101st book for the book challenge. It was The Partner: A Novel by John Grisham.
Patrick Lanigan, a partner in a Biloxi law firm, has disappeared with $90 million. He faked his death and stole $90 million from his law firm and hid in various banks. He has been in hiding in Brazil as Danilo Silva for four years. He left behind a wife and child in Mississippi as well as his law practice and his partners. He faked his death in a fiery car crash on a lonely road in rural Mississippi but watched his own funeral from a nearby tree. Then he ran to Europe and from there to Brazil, where he met Eva Miranda, who has been helping him. He had plastic surgery and lots 70 pounds. He has made a new life for himself. But now he has been caught by a private investigating concern who have been hired by insurance companies to retrieve the money Patrick stole. They torture Patrick to learn where the money is. But Patrick doesn’t know where the money is. It is under the control of Eva.
The FBI, tipped off by Eva, steps in to stop the torture of Patrick and get him back to the States. They take charge of the situation and bring Patrick, severely wounded, back to Mississippi. He is placed in a hospital at an Air Force base under heavy guard. He asks for a lawyer, his friend Sandy from New Orleans. Patrick orchestrates his defense on the charges of stealing the $90 million and capital murder for the death of the body found in the burning car. Patrick has a plan for beating all the charges he has been saddled with and Sandy is to do exactly what Patrick tells him to do. Patrick is also being sued for divorce by his wife. But Patrick had planned ahead before he disappeared. He had gathered information about his wife and his partners and their client and has this information stored in a warehouse. The federal government will want this information and will go along with Patrick’s scheme and will drop the charges of theft of the $90 million dollars if Patrick gives it back and gives the FBI the information he has. It’s fool-proof. Sandy arranges it all. He also arranges the divorce proceedings and fixes the insurance money that Patrick’s wife got from his death. The capital murder charges are also dropped because they can’t be proved. Patrick is basically a free man.
Patrick is free to live his life and reunite with Eva and the rest of his money. He goes to Europe to meet with her. But something goes terribly wrong.
This was a fascinating book. It was amazing to read how Patrick managed to get out of every charge. He had everything planned down to the last detail. But the ending was a surprise. It was very good.
