Book Challenge Update–121

I have finished the 121st book for the book challenge. It was Full Tilt (Janet Evanovich’s Full Series) by Janet Evanovich and Charlotte Hughes.

Full-Tilt-by-Janet-Evanovich-and-Charlotte-HughesJamie Swift is the publisher of Beaumont, South Carolina’s newspaper. She has a new investor, a man named M. Holt. He is coming to meet with her for the first time.

Jamie goes to a campaign rally for her friend DeeDee Fontana’s husband, Frankie. Frankie is running for mayor. She meets a tall, handsome man with a slick car. He is absolutely charming. His name is Max.

The next day, Jamie discovers that the handsome man is Max Holt, her investor. She is upset. But she agrees to let him help get the paper out since she is short an editor. As they are working late that night, two thugs try to kill Max by shooting through the window of Jamie’s office. Jamie is slightly hurt. The sheriff is called. Max and Jamie spend the night at DeeDee and Frankie’s mansion where there is a lot of security.

The next day they work together again at the paper and try to find out more about the attack. Jamie is engaged to be married to Philip Standish. His mother, Annabelle Standish, is very involved in the community. She is planning their wedding. Max is looking into the city budget and the taxes. He is sure there is fraud going on.

Jamie and Max go to Jamie’s house to get a bag of clothes for her to take back to DeeDee’s house. While they are there, the alarm goes off on Max’s car. Someone has planted a bomb of dynamite on his car. Max defuses the bomb safely. Who is making these attempts on Max and Jamie’s lives?

Back at DeeDee and Frankie’s, they are relaxing before dinner. They are having cocktails. Suddenly, a molotov cocktail is thrown through the window and lands in the living room and starts a small fire. They quickly put the fire out, but Frankie sees the need for more security. He wonders if he should drop out of the race for mayor but DeeDee says no.

Jamie says that this may be the work of a recluse named Swamp Dog, a man who lives in the swamp. She and Max go to find in. They rent a boat and travel through the swamp to his houseboat. He takes them prisoner and threatens them. Max manages to disarm him and gives Swamp Dog his card and asks him if he would like to work for Max. Jamie and Max leave, but the fuel line to their boat has been cut. Jamie and Max spend the night in the swamp and are attracted to each other.

Jamie and Max are rescued. Frankie hires more security and three of his wrestler friends come to help as well. Then Swamp Dog comes to help as security. The two thugs who are trying to kill Max managed to get hired as security people. One of them fires a shot into the living room at Max and Swamp Dog cuts his throat. The other one takes off. They are being paid by a preacher who lost out on the sale of one of Max’s television stations. He is angry.

Then DeeDee’s dog disappears. Then the little boy of the audit clerk at the city budget office is kidnapped. Then Swamp Dog tells Frankie he will take him to get the dog. Max goes after Swamp Dog and Frankie. He finds them in a city garage. Swamp Dog is holding Frankie, the little boy, and the dog. He is planning on killing Max and the others. Max keeps him talking. Suddenly, Swamp Dog is shot and killed. He has been shot by Annabelle Standish. She had hired Swamp Dog to terrorize Max and the city to keep them from finding out about the embezzled funds. Jamie runs Max’s car into the garage and Max overpowers Annabelle and everyone is saved.

Max is headed for Tennessee to confront the preacher who is trying to kill him. Jamie wants to go him. At first he says no. But then he changes his mind and takes her with him.

I liked this book. There is nice sexual tension between max and Jamie. They make a good team. I will be looking forward to the next book to see what adventures are in store for them.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.
