Book Challenge Update–128

This is my 1,500 post.

I have read the 128th book for the book challenge. It was Seven Up: Stephanie Plum No. 7 (Stephanie Plum Novels) by Janet Evanovich.

seven upStephanie is after FTA Eddie De Chooch. He was arrested at a rest stop smuggling cigarettes. He is old. He can’t see. He can’t see. He has trouble taking a piss. He should be easy to catch. But when Stephanie goes to his house, he sneaks out the window and gets away from her. She and Lula go going for him but instead discover Loretta Ricci in the shed with five bullet holes in her chest. Yikes!

Back at the Plum residence, Stephanie’s mother and Grandma are pressuring Stephanie and Joe to set a date for when they will get married. In a moment of panic, Stephanie blurts out, “August!” So her mother and Grandma and her sister Valerie who has come home after her failed marriage take Stephanie dress shopping. They talk Stephanie into ordering a wedding gown. Then, without telling Stephanie, they rent a hall when a couple who had rented the hall for a 50th wedding celebration has a death and cancels.

Mooner comes to Stephanie and is worried about Dougie. He has disappeared. Stephanie goes looking for Dougie along with Eddie DeChooch. She thinks that somehow the two are related. Bennie Colucci and Ziggy Garvey show up looking for Eddie DeChooch too. Stephanie finds DeChooch but he shoots at her.

Stephanie decides to visit Mary Maggie Mason, a mud wrestler at the Snake Pit, which is owned by Eddie DeChooch. She owns the white Cadillac that Eddie is driving. Stephanie goes to see her but she swears she doesn’t know where DeChooch is.

Joyce Barnhardt says she is taking De Chooch’s case. Stephanie is not giving it up. Eddie calls her and says that he wants her to give him something. She says she will give him this something if he tells her where Dougie is. Bennie and Ziggy are involved. DeChooch smashes Stephanie’s car. She resorts to a Harley. Then she discovers that the “something” that DeChooch wants is Louis DeStephano’s heart. DeChooch removed it from the dead Louie D in Richmond and brought it back to New Jersey and his wife Sophia is after him to get it back. So Stephanie and Lula look for the heart. They look in Dougie’s house. Mooner tells them that a pot roast was stolen a week ago. There is no house. They decide to get a pig heart to use as a human heart in the switch. Meanwhile Mooner goes missing too.

Joe gets upset about Stephanie’s job and tells her he wants her to quit being a bounty hunter. Stephanie gets mad and calls off the wedding plans.

Stephanie gets the pig heart and takes it to Richmond with Ranger. They give it to Sophia, Louie D’s widow who is schizophrenic and her sister. They tie up the two and discover Dougie and Mooner in the basement where they have been held by the sisters. They take the boys back to New Jersey. Ranger tells Stephanie he will help her bring in DeChooch but if he does, she must spend the night with him.

Stephanie is still looking for Eddie DeChooch. The police have found his white Cadillac smashed by a train. But no DeChooch. Stephanie goes to his house and finds him there. She attempts to bring him in, but Sophia shows up and shoots him and wants Stephanie to cut out his heart. Luckily the police show up and subdues Sophia. Eddie escapes.

Stephanie goes back to her apartment and DeChooch shows up, bleeding. He doesn’t want a girl to bring him in. He wants Ranger to bring him in. Stephanie calls Ranger. Ranger comes to get Eddie DeChooch and takes him first to the hospital.

Stephanie goes to bed. She hears a sound in the small hours of the night. It is Ranger. He has come to collect.

This was a great story. You just knew that the wedding plans couldn’t possibly work out. Stephanie isn’t ready to get married. She is still fantasizing about Ranger. And now here he is! The plot with Eddie DeChooch was very interesting. Imagine. Why would the man take Louie D’s heart? Then lose it? Crazy! I really enjoyed this book.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.
