Book Challenge Update–133

I have finished the 133rd book for the book challenge. It was Motor Mouth: An Alexandra Barnaby Novel by Janet Evanovich.

motor-mouth-mmpbBarney has broken up with Sam Hooker but is working as his spotter at NASCAR. She broke up with him because he slept with a salesclerk. A good reason to break it off with someone. Anyway, Spanky beats him in the last race of the season. Gobbles, another spotter, somehow manages to get himself locked in the racecar hauler of Spanky’s cars. Barney and Hooker have to get him out. They try to do so when the hauler is stopped but can’t so they decide to borrow the hauler. They drive the hauler to a parking lot and find they still can’t get in it, so they drive to the warehouse of Felicia Ibarra. In the warehouse, they manage to release Gobbles but also find Oscar Huevo dead in the hauler. Beans the St. Bernard dog bites Oscar in the shoulder. Oscar is wrapped in plastic and has been shot.

While they have the hauler and the cars, Barney thinks the cars have been cheating and wants to take them apart to find a computer chip that has been regulating traction control. She cuts up the two cars in the hauler. She does find a small computer chip under the gear shift of one of the cars. It is like nothing she has seen before. It is self-contained. It is remoteless. Barney and Hooker dispose of the pieces of the car and Gobbles flies home to North Carolina. They leave the hauler to be found by Spanky’s people but Beans is inside. Ray Huevo’s people have Beans. Barney and Hooker try to rescue Beans. They follow a car around Miami and finally see the people go into a hotel. They break into the room and free Beans.

Barney and Hooker take Oscar’s body and leave it in Spanky’s car in the lot near the Huevo’s boat. Someone is sure to find it there. Then they fly back to North Carolina for Thanksgiving. Barney stays with Hooker after someone ransacks her apartment. Barney goes to the victory party for Spanky at the bar and sees Rodriguez and Lucca, the two thugs that have been following them. As she and Hooker return to his house, they discover his gatekeeper has been shot and killed. They hide out in one of his warehouses. They follow Rodriguez and Lucca to the home of the spotter for Spanky. They have killed the spotter. Barney and Hooker manage to capture Lucca and chain him in Spanky’s trailer with the spotter’s body but he frees himself and causes a major accident with the trailer. Barney and Hooker charter and plane and fly back to Miami to talk to Ray Huevo.

Barney makes friends with Suzanne Huevo, the ex-wife of Oscar Huevo who hates Ray Huevo. She wants to ensure her sons get their share of the company’s wealth. Ray is trying to sell the computer chip’s technology to a Zurich company, to Anthony Miranda. Miranda kidnaps Hooker and hold him and Gobbles for ransom, for the computer chip.

Rosa thinks Beans has eaten the computer chip. They are all waiting for Beans to poop out the chip to give to Miranda to get Hooker and Gobbles back. But Barney gives Miranda a bag of poop and goes in to get Hooker and Gobbles. They find a bomb and throw it in the water. Later they discover that Rosa had the computer chip in her house all along. Beans didn’t eat it.

Barney and Hooker get back together. At least for a while.

This is rollicking good read. There is a lot of mad dashing around from here to there, and bodies stashed everywhere. Beans figures prominently in this story. He is a great diversion. Rosa and Felicia are funny and helpful with all their relatives. Hooker is is lovable self. All in all, a fun read.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.
