Book Challenge Update–134

I have read the 134th book for the book challenge. It was Full Speed (Janet Evanovich’s Full Series) by Janet Evanovich.

full speedJamie and Max set off for Sweet Pea, Tennessee but on the way there, Max tells Jamie he doesn’t want her to go with him. Jamie storms off and buys an old truck (complete with a dog named Fleas) and sets out for Sweet Pea on her own.

Jamie reaches Sweet Pea and buys a disguise of a red wig and tight and short clothing and goes to the Rev. Harlan Rawlins tent revival. She goes to the altar call and tells him she has a sex addiction so she can get time alone with him for a story. Max sees through her disguise and brings her back to the cabin where he and Dave Anderson are staying. Max and Dave are pretending to be electricians hired by Bennett Electrical and will be working on Rawlins house when Jamie arrives.

Jamie arrives at Rawlins’s home. She is ushered into Rawlins private office while Max and Dave are working on the power and phones. Rawlins comes on to her and kisses her. He makes an appointment to see her the next day at a hotel. Jamie agrees to meet him. She goes back home, but Nick Santoni sees her and knows who she is. Santoni is the mob figure who is trying to kill Max.

Max worries about Jamie meeting Rawlins at the hotel. They taken precautions such as using bugs to listen in to the conversation. Jamie and Rawlins are eating and she puts laxatives in his wine. He feels unwell and goes to the restroom. She hears a crash and the door is locked. Dave has acted as the waiter. They open the door and find Rawlins with his throat cut. He is dead. They bolt from the hotel.

Jamie is in Walmart and meets Nick Santoni who tells her his name is Michael Juliano and is picking out a dress for his twin sister who has died. Jamie feels sorry for him and befriends him. She has coffee with him and agrees to meet him for dinner.

Max and Dave install Muffin in Jamie’s truck. Max finds out more information about Nick Santoni. He learns he uses the alias Michael Juliano. He had a twin sister who died at birth. His uncle Leo Santoni is trying to get him to stop this foolishness. He lives in Lexington in a big house with lots of security. Max and Dave will try to get into the house with the electrical company.

Jamie meets Nick for dinner. She is accosted by a man with a ponytail who she thinks is threatening Nick. She tells Nick she wants to help him and that he should go to the police. He declines. She finally goes home after Nick makes a move on her and she feels uncomfortable.

Max finds that Dave has been taken hostage by Nick Santoni’s people. He is being held “where dead things go.” Max tells Jamie to get out of the cabin because Nick Santoni knows where they are because of the GPS in their phones. Jamie looks for her phone and her wallet and keys but can’t find them after she takes her shower. There stands Nick Santoni. Now she realizes who he really is. He forces her into the car. He takes her to his house. She calls Max and tells Max she is going away with Santoni. He has her and Fleas. They are traveling on his plane. His henchman Rudy had killed Rawlins at Santoni’s bidding.

Jamie, Santoni, and Fleas arrive at the air strip. He has a gun to Jamie’s head. Max is trying to stop him. Then Uncle Leo gets out of a plane. He begs Santoni to stop. Nick shoots Uncle Leo. The FBI agents shoot Santoni and kill him, but Santoni nicks Flea in the tail. Jamie is upset. Max takes Jamie and Flea and they all head back to Beaumont.

I liked this story. I liked the sexual tension between Max and Jamie. The plot was good and just complicated enough to be interesting. This was a fun read.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.

Sexual tension is a great plot device, isn’t it?
