Book Challenge Update–139

I have finished the 139th book for the book challenge. It was Bones Of The Lost: A Temperance Brennan Novel by Kathy Reichs.

bones-of-the-lostTemperance Brennan is the forensic anthropologist at the medical examiner’s office. She studies bones of the dead.

A set of bones have come in. They are supposed to be the bones of Peruvian dogs, ancient dogs that were smuggled in. She is going to x-ray them and look at them to make sure that is what they are. Dew, the ICE agent, is working with her on this issue. A man named Rockett smuggled them in and Dew is looking into his activities.

Then a hit and run young girl is brought in. She is about 15 years old and was deliberately run down. She has dark skin and bleached blonde hair. There is a fragment of ivory imbedded in her scalp. She is wearing a pink barrette and carrying a pink kitty purse in which is a card for an English class for Spanish speakers and John-Henry Gross’s airport lounge card. John-Henry Gross was a business man who died in a fire six months ago.

Tempe gets very involved in looking for the killer of this young girl. She puts fliers up all over near where she was killed and manages to get something put in the newspaper. She visits the convenience store nearby and talks to the store clerk. She and Slidell the detective even go to John-Henry’s nearby bar and talk to the regulars there. There they see a photo of John-Henry and Rockett together. They decide to talk to Rockett, too.

Rockett is not very cooperative. Tempe notices ivory pieces in Rockett’s home and wonders if he is involved in tranficking young girls as well as smuggling antiquities.

Pete, Tempe’s ex-husband, needs her to sign their divorce papers so he can marry Summer, his girlfriend. Tempe does so. Pete and Tempe get along very well. He is taking care of her cat while she goes to Afghanistan for a job.

Tempe goes to Afghanistan for a job to see if a Marine shot two Afghans in the back or not. Lt. Gross is accused of shooting two Afghan men in the back. He claims they yelled Allah Akbar and came charging at him. The locals have agreed to allow Tempe to exhume the bodies and examine them. She flies to Afghanistan and is able to see her daughter Kate while she is there. She goes to the village to oversee the exhumation. There is an explosion of a mortar while the exhumation is taking place and one body is severely damaged and her ankle is injured. But she does the examination. She finds that Gross shot the men from the front as he claimed.

She goes to Camp LeJeune to Gross’s Article 32 hearing and testifies that he shot the men from the front. He gets off from the charges. But she realizes that he is related to John-Henry Story. And she is suspicious of him.

Back in Charlotte, Tempe is still trying to find the killer of the young girl. She was given a photo of four Afghan girls by someone in Afghanistan. One of them looks familiar. Her name is Ara. Slidell finds two men who left DNA sperm on the girl. One is Majerick. He is a nasty character. He is involved with a massage parlor.

Tempe gets a call from a woman at a taqueria about the girl. She and Slidell go to the taqueria and talk to Rosa. She tells them about the girls who came in and the man they were with. Later, Tempe receives a box at her door. It contains a human tongue. Then they find Rosa’s body. She has been killed for talking to them. Tempe begins to get threatening emails from someone called citizenjustice.

Slidell investigates the massage parlor but doesn’t get anywhere. There seems to be dead ends everywhere. But Tempe then realizes she knows where the girls are being held. In a wharehouse that was being converted to apartments. She goes to the location and finds Rockett there dead. She has her gun and has told Slidell to meet her there with the police. She finds Majerick and struggles with him and shoots him dead. Then she finds Gross who is the ring leader of the traficking ring. She struggles with him and loses her gun, but finds a pipe and bashes him in the groin and in the shins with in and hits him in the head. The police arrive and he is subdued. They find the girls and free them. Ara was the young girl who was killed in the hit and run. The men in Afghanistan were yelling Ara at Gross because he had taken Ara and sent her to the United States to become a prostitute.

Peter calls off his wedding to Summer. He decides it wouldn’t work out. He hasn’t filed the divorce papers. Tempe is confused. Her relationship with Ryan is up in the air as he is grieving over his daughter Lily. Now Peter seems like he wants to get back together with Tempe. What to do?

I loved this book. The story was complicated but it was very logical and very thrilling. Tempe is tenacious in following leads and making sure that this young girl did not die in vain. The plot was great. It addressed an important problem in our country. It was a very good story.

About mairedubhtx

I am a "youngish" grandmother of 15 year old twin granddaughter who has recently (is a year "recent"?) adopted Islam as my way of life, much to the consternation of my family. I love to read. I love to write. I am writing a book about my decision to revert, about my spiritual journey. I have another blog about stories from my youth, my parents, and grandparents. It's a blog so my OCD daughter will not be able to throw it out when I die. I suffer from depression and anxiety, for which I am treated, so my posts may be a bit dark at times. C'est la vie.
