The earliest occupation I wanted as a child was the same as many children. I wanted to be a teacher. I think kids want to be teachers because they are the authority figures that are prominent in a child’s life. For me, it was a little different as my father was a teacher and his mother before him. Education is in my blood. I would probably be a good teacher because I’m enthusiastic about learning. I love to learn new things and like to share what I’ve learned with other people.
I went to Catholic school and was taught by nuns. As a child, I also wanted to be a nun. They were authoritative figures and role models for little girls. So my friends and I would play “nun” and teacher at the same time, not really cognizant that nuns have many jobs besides teaching. Many nuns are nurses and others help the poor. But we played nun and teacher because that is what we knew best,
As I grew older, my aspirations changed. When I was around ten or eleven, I received a book for Christmas that was called “All About Archaeology.” This book changed my life. It told about all the early explorations of famous archaeologists and the early civilizations they investigated. The book’s information ranged from the early Sumerians to Howard Carter and his discovery of Tutahkamum’s tomb. It explained the life of an archeologist and the requirements to be an archeologist. This was the occupation I wanted for myself. I didn’t care about discovering treasure, but was interested in early civilizations, especially Maya civilization. This was the occupation I wanted even as I was in college. If I hadn’t gotten married right out of college, I would have gone to graduate school and become an archeologist. I still am very interested in recent discoveries and work of archeologists. This is the calling I wish I had followed even to this day.
I don’t think my excitement about archeology will ever go away. I have been to Mexico twice to tour some of the ruins of the Maya and the Zapotecas. These were great vacations. Archeology is my true love.
Taught by nuns? My sympathies!
My whole life, up until we moved up here, I have never seen a nun, “in person!” Sad, huh? We were in Wal mart, and we saw 2 nuns, it literally shocked me! I had only seen nuns, in movies until then! We also have them in the hospital here! It’s pretty cool actually!
